How does Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic's combat system work?
While playing the game there's stuff like: Critical Strike 19-20, 2x; Resist 10/-2 vs. Cold; DC10; Save. Can someone explain this whole system to me? What does Saves and DC and those things of the sort mean?
It uses a combat system called the D20 system. D20 is also used by Dungeons and Dragons if that helps.
Basically, any time you attack, it generates a random number between 1 and 20. Then that number goes against the enemy's armor number. You may notice that under descriptions of armor, it gives armor and max dexterity bonus. The amount of armor it provides is how high the enemy must roll to hit you. So if you have 18 armor, and they roll a 19, you take damage. But a 17 or lower and they miss.
Then there are skill modifiers. Feats, special or upgraded weapons, or your basic stat points can add or subtract from the result. For example, 18 strength has a +4 modifier. This means it automatically adds 4 to all melee damage rolls.
If you roll a 20 on attack, it automatically hits no matter what. A 20 is also a critical hit. Depending on the weapon,. it could do double (x2) or triple (x3) damage.
Resist is simply that sometimes, you might be able to ignore some of the damage from cold, heat, etc.
DC is difficulty class. Basically, how hard something is. Anything that is you vs something else is DC. You vs lock would be using security skill. In that case, your security skill plus modifiers from items and such against the lock's difficulty level.
A save is where you try to resist damage. If the enemy uses, say, force lightning on you, then you can roll a d20. If your result is higher then your enemy's appropriate stat, (I think for force powers, it is your save roll against their d20 plus their wisdom) then you will take either half or no damage.
You could easily reproduce the entire Knights of the Old Republic as a tabletop game. However, it would take much longer, because calculating a single attack on paper can easily take 10 minutes. You will understand it much better if you go out and read a copy of Dungeons and Dragon's player's handbook.
